US police have reported one person dead and four others injured in a shooting at a Virginia hookah place.

The deadly incident happened just before Friday midnight at the Melody Hookah Lounge in downtown Blacksburg near Virginia Tech’s campus, police said.

Of the five people shot in the shooting incident, one person died, and four others were taken to hospitals, police said.

Police added, as of yet, the severity of the patients’ injuries was not known.

One of those injured in the shooting is a Virginia Tech student, university President Tim Sands said in an online post.

"Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased and we extend our support to those who were injured," Sands wrote.

The Melody Hookah Lounge is located less than a mile from a memorial dedicated to victims of an earlier shooting at Virginia Tech.

On April 16, 2007, 32 people lost their lives after being gunned down on the campus of Virginia Tech by Seung-Hui Cho, a student at the college who later took his own life.
