Afghan Surgeons Help Female Walk After 21 Years

A team of Afghan surgeons at Sardar Mohammad Dawoud Khan Hospital conducted a successful operation on a female patient who was unable to walk for almost 20 years.

Twenty-one year old Samana roughed up her knees majority of her life by moving around by dragging her legs with the support of her upper body. After 20 years, hope enlightened her as a group of Afghan surgeons changed her life by reversing her disability.

The team of surgeons conducted six operations on Samana's legs that enabled her to stand and walk with a walker.

"Both of her knees were bent 90 degrees that prevented her from walking," Surgeon Mohammad Ismail Wardak said. "We conducted an operation that successfully ended with her knees being straightened."

The young lady who hails from a poor family from western Herat province thanked the team of surgeons and expressed hope for her future.

"I was disappointed several times because I had consulted several doctors for treatments, but no luck," Samana said. "But these doctors here renewed my hope and now I am healthy and happy. In the future I want to become a doctor."
