An Australian woman has been arrested on suspicion of murdering eight children who were found dead inside her home.
The 37-year-old woman is currently recovering from stab wounds in hospital under police guard, Queensland Police Detective Inspector Bruno Asnicar told The Associated Press on Friday.
He went on to say that the woman, who is believed to be the mother of seven of the victims, is yet to be charged.
He added that the eighth child is thought to be her niece.
The unnamed woman suffering from stab wounds to the chest was found in the residence with the victims.
"We're not looking for anybody else — we're comfortable that the community at large is safe," Asnicar said.
Earlier on Friday, Australian police said eight children aged between 18 months and 15 years old had been found dead at a house in the northern city of Cairns.
Lisa Thaiday, who claims to be the woman's cousin, said that the woman's 20-year-old son arrived home and found his brothers and sisters murdered inside their home.
