An American social activist says racial discrimination against African Americans in the United States is a systemic problem that cannot be “solved by electing more black faces to high places”.
Bruce A. Dixon, managing editor at Black Agenda Report, and a state committee member of the Georgia Green Party, made the remarks in a phone interview with Press TV on Tuesday.
He was commenting on the Congressional Black Caucus’ criticism of a Missouri grand jury's decision that did not indict a white police officer who shot dead a black teenager in August.
The Congressional Black Caucus, organization representing black members of the US Congress, called the Monday night decision a "miscarriage of justice" and termed it as “a slap in the face to Americans”.
The statement came minutes after St. Louis County prosecutor Robert McCulloch said that Darren Wilson would not be indicted and that he would not even face charges for killing the 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson on August 9.
Dixon said that we should “bear in mind that this is the very same Congressional Black Caucus that originally approved the militarization of police throughout the United States.”
“And its prominent spokesmen, like Congressman James Clyburn from South Carolina, always upfront saying the solution to this kind of thing is to elect more black members of Congress, and more black mayors, more black aldermen and local officials, but that’s not a real solution,” he added.
“The same sort of things that are happening in Ferguson are happening in cities and towns across the United States, where the police forces have been led by black faces, and cities are led by black mayors – places like Philadelphia, Atlanta, and New Orleans,” he noted.
“So this is a systemic problem that is not solved by electing more black faces to high places. And the Congressional Black Caucus’ solution to this…does not change the system fundamentally at all,” Dixon empathized.
