A new study shows over 11,000 Brazilians were killed in police operations between 2009 and 2013, averaging six deaths each day, Press TV reports. Brazilian police killed 11,197 people from 2009 to 2013, a Sao Paulo-based NGO, called Brazilian Forum on Public Safety, said on Tuesday, accusing police of making "abusive use of lethal force." The study added that 2,212 civilians and 490 police officers were killed in operations carried out in 2013. According to the study, Rio de Janeiro state, in which 416 people were killed, had the highest per capita rate of killing in 2013. A total of 50,806 people, or about one person every 10 minutes, were killed in all homicides in Brazil in 2013, the study stated. It also noted that almost 70 percent of the homicide victims were black and over half of them were between 15 and 29. “This study reinforces a dramatic picture that Brazil faces, which shows that our society is violent with very high murder rate, especially committed by those that are supposed to protect us,” Renato Sergio de Lima, from the Brazilian Forum on Public Safety, told Press TV. Growing violence has forced Brazilian officials to invest more on security measures. They spent nearly 100 billion dollars in 2013 to improve security across the country. “Security investments just started a while ago and still needs to be better distributed. It’s also important that people follow and supervise the application of those funds,” Roberto Mauricio Xenofre, from the Brazilian NGO, said.
