Atletico Madrids unbeaten run have extended to five matches after La Liga resumption by beating Alaves 2-1 at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.
After a goalless first half, Atletico broke the deadlock when Saul Niguez headed the ball home from as free kick in the hour mark.
Atletico double the lead after Diego Costa scored from the spot after a VAR awarded penalty in the 73rd minute.
Alaves managed to cut back the deficit when Joeselu converted form the spot another VAR awarded penalty in the dying moments, but it was not enough and Atletico secured third in standings with fur points clear of fourth-placed Sevilla.
On Tuesday, Diego Simeones team will travel to Barcelona to line up against the Catalan Giants.
