US President Donald Trump (L) and national security adviser Robert OBrien
The United States appears to be pointing the finger at "foreign adversaries" over the social unrest that has gripped the country over the murder of another black man by a white police officer.
US national security adviser Robert OBrien claimed on Sunday that the ongoing protests across the country are being exploited by the likes of China and Russia.
"Ive seen a number of tweets from the Chinese today that are taking some sort of pleasure and solace in what theyre seeing here," OBrien told ABC.
Republican Senator Marco Rubio had earlier suggested on Twitter that other countries are "actively stoking & promoting violence & confrontation from multiple angles."
"Senator Rubio is spot on," OBrien said, adding that the senator is "100 percent correct" that foreign adversaries are going to try to "take advantage of this crisis to sew discord and to try and damage our democracy."
He also mentioned Russia in his blame game as the protesters were defying curfew to seek justice for Floyd.
"And I want to tell our foreign adversaries, whether its, you know, Zimbabwe or a China, that the difference between us and you is that that -- that officer who killed George Floyd, hell be -- hell be investigated and hell be prosecuted and hes going to receive a fair trial," OBrien said. "The American people that want to go out and protest peacefully, theyre going to be allowed to seek redress from their government. Theyre not going to be thrown in jail for peaceful protesting."
Floyds death on Monday and the subsequent release of a bystanders cellphone video on Tuesday sparked demonstrations across the states.
A white Minneapolis police officer pinned him down with his knee, which led to his death.
Police-involved shootings and killings of unarmed black men in the hands of white police officers have led to mass protests across the country in recent years and the formation of the Black Lives Matter movement.
