Defiant Abdullah Meets Politicians in Midst of Election Dispute

Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah in a statement on Saturday once again rejected the presidential election results, saying the announcement is not credible and is based on "fraud."

The statement followed two days of meetings between Abdullah and other prominent politicians including: former Afghan president Hamid Karzai, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, a presidential candidate and the leader of Hizb-e-Islami party, Mohammad Karim Khalili, the leader of Hizb-e-Wahdat-e-Islami Mardom-e-Afghanistan, Batur Dostum, son of first vice president Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum, Mohammad Mohaqiq, the second deputy of Abdullah, Salahuddin Rabbani, the leader of Jamiat-e-Islami party, and the former Minister of Finance Anwarul Haq Ahadi.

According to the statement, the announcement of the election results has also pushed the peace process into jeopardy.

Based on the statement, the election results were announced based on an "illegitimate process" and in contrast to the Constitution, which "will deepen the crisis" in the country and the "Afghan people will not accept it."

The statement noted that there was a strong emphasis on the need to form an inclusive government that believes in the peace process, reflects the political consensus among the Afghan people and supports the ongoing peace process.

The statement suggests that in order to prevent further crisis, and damage to the peace process--and in the view of the sensitive situations in the country--the friendly countries in the region and in the world should avoid supporting a result based on "fraud."

"Peace is a vital necessity of the people of Afghanistan. All politicians of the country should maintain their unity and coordination to help bring the peace process to a final conclusion through intra-Afghan negotiations," the statement says.

The statement also supports implementation of the week-long reduction in violence and the finalization of a date for the signing of the peace agreement between the United States and the Taliban.

"It is hoped that these steps lead to the start of intra-Afghan talks, ceasefire and durable peace in the country," the statement said.
