Russia’s President Vladimir Putin met his Tajik counterpart Emomali Rahmon on Wednesday and discussed security issues Central Asia is facing, including ‘threats’ coming from Afghanistan, Russian news agencies reported.

"We thoroughly discussed the security situation in Central Asia, including threats and challenges coming from Afghanistan," Putin said following talks in Moscow.

Rahmon, in turn, noted that "Tajikistan is a buffer zone preventing the spread of security threats coming from that region".

He added that Dushanbe called for resolving Afghanistan’s problems peacefully. "Tajikistan is interested in a stable and prospering Afghanistan," the Tajik leader emphasized.

Putin said that the parties had agreed to continue boosting defense cooperation and cooperation in the fight against terrorism and drug trafficking at the bilateral level and within the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).

According to Putin, both parties highlighted the role of Russia’s 201st military base in maintaining peace and stability in Central Asia.

Tajikistan’s Foreign Ministry also said agreements on cooperation in the migration sector are also to be signed.

Putin said that the parties had agreed to continue boosting defense cooperation and cooperation in the fight against terrorism and drug trafficking at the bilateral level and within the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).
