District Governor of Helmand province, Mohammad Anwar Khan was killed in an armed insurgents ambush on Tuesday night in Nad Ali district of Helmand, officials said on Wednesday.
According to the provincial governor's spokesman Omar Zwak, the incident occurred when Khan was on patrol in the district.
His bodyguard and a policeman were killed and six other policemen were wounded in the attack, Zwak said.
The victims have been taken to a nearby hospital.
No group including the Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.
